SEO Conferences: The Downside

Mar 42009

published by Hannah in SEO with 5 comments

SEO conferences can be a good venue for learning more SEO techniques and the industry as a whole. However, the truth is that you will likely not learn as much from these conferences than if you simply sit down and do some reading, whether they be good old-fashioned SEO books, ebooks, or SEO blogs. The reason for this is that:

  1. the conference format is not discussion friendly - Speakers are on a time constraint so that it is virtually impossible to discuss complex topics in depth. What you’ll get are usually sound bites or outlines of topics you already know - unless you’re at the beginner level. Even with panel discussions the answers are spewed out as fast as possible to accommodate other people with questions.
  2. many speakers will NOT give you their secrets - Why should they spew out their top secrets and help out the competition? Many speakers come with an ulterior motive - to impress and sell their services, whether as an SEO or a speaker.

If you wish to attend SEO conferences what you should do is to at least make sure you make the most of it. Go there not in hopes of learning some top SEO technique but to be able to build your social network. Prepare to get chatty and don’t forget to bring your calling card! At the same time it would help if you simply narrow down the conferences you attend to those that you feel will actually help you learn something. Look at the topics, time allotted to speakers, and if possible attend conferences that have workshops instead of plain speeches.

If you do want to attend an SEO conference this year I suggest you go see the Search Marketing Expo (SMX) schedule to see when the one nearest to your location will happen. If you’re in Canada or Australia you’d better look it up now since the Toronto and Sydney Expo will be the first ones this year.

Accessibility in China

Feb 182009

published by Gary in Accessibility | SEO | SEO Tips with 2 comments

One of the major issues tackled by SEO is accessibility. We want to make sure that a website  that’s being optimised is accessible not just by search engine spiders but also by users regardless of their connection speed, browser used, etc. A thing overlooked by many SEOs though is checking whether the website is accessible [...]

On my last post i gave some tips on how to increase search engines’ perception of your web pages as being relevant to your targeted keywords and phrases. One of the key things in search engine optimisation is relevance. Before I discuss relevance though let me give you the dictionary definition of the word it was derived from, relevant.
relevant (adj): closely connected or appropriate to the matter at hand
Hence when talking about relevance in SEO terms what is taken into consideration is [...]

Email Marketing Tips: How Not to be Mistaken as Spam

Dec 172008

published by Gary in Online Marketing | SEO Tips with 17 comments

The last post I wrote on email marketing emphasised the need to not only get your email noticed but also to get people to act on the information (read: get conversion rates up) they get from the email sent. What I didn’t discuss in greater detail though is how to stay away from being spammy [...]

The SEO Christmas Alphabet: C for Content

Dec 152008

published by Hannah in Copywriting | SEO | SEO Basics with 8 comments

This topic has been discussed way too many times by way too many people yet it is a bit discouraging how many website owners still do not really care to give emphasis on the development of their website’s actual content. For the most part I believe that it is because many wish to get as [...]

SEO’s CHRISTMAS ALPHABET

Nov 272008

published by Hannah in SEO with 7 comments

We’re buying Christmas décor this weekend and this has obviously put me in the mood for an early Christmas post. I know it’s corny but instead of candy canes, happiness, and reindeers I’ve substituted keywords that are relevant to SEO and came up with the SEO’s CHRISTMAS ALPHABET.
C – ontent
H – 1, H2, and other [...]

Benefitting from Email Marketing

Oct 282008

To be honest whenever I hear the term email marketing one of the first things that enter my mind is the word “SPAM”. Perhaps, for this very reason, legit businesses are shying away from email marketing. However email marketing is actually different from spamming and not using it as part of your marketing campaign could [...]

Courting Bloggers

Oct 232008

published by Hannah in SEO with 4 comments

Due to the proliferation of blogs with spam content and blogs that are created to simply bloat the number of links pointing to a site, it is no wonder that people have perceived links coming from blogs to be of less value than they were before. The good news though is that according to Bill [...]
