More (Useful) Content for More Links

We all know that one of the main reasons why websites add blogs to their site is to be able to provide fresh content and thus hopefully get more traffic and links. If you do not have the time to update a blog regularly though or you find that adding a blog to your site is still not enough to get you the amount of links nor the traffic you want you might want to offer other forms of additional content that will hopefully get you more links. Here are some ideas:

  • offer free useful tools/services – The tool/service you offer need not be the most brilliant idea but it should be useful or at least catchy enough. Firefox and WordPress plug-ins are very popular so you might want to make your own plug-in. You can also offer free email subscriptions. Just make sure your email subscription really has something useful or people will be unsubscribing in no time.
  • make a cute game – This might even be harder to think about but if you have an idea providing a game in your site will end up giving you more regular visitors or more links, depending if its an online game or a downloadable one. Note that you don’t have to offer a graphic rich game. A good example of a game that gets lots of visit is the game at Free Rice. It is a combination of learning (vocabulary), fun, and has a very specific purpose (charity). Although the game is not the most original one out there they packages it in such a way that people will return to help charity. While they didn’t come up with the game just to get links my point is simply that you can get people’s attention even with a simple game. You just have to find a way to make it work.
  • offer free tutorials – You can offer free tutorials on whatever your site is about. Instead of posting tips on your blog (as I have blogged before) you can consolidate everything and offer an in-depth resource. Another approach would be to offer interactive tutorials to visitors.
  • hold a contest – People just love joining, especially winning, contests. Hold a contest and give away some real prizes. If you have an online store you can give away discount coupons or even gift certificates to your store. If not you can give free subscriptions or ship a certain product. Sometimes even plain bragging rights is enough to motivate people but that really depends on what the contest is about. Of course this isn’t really (useful) content but it is (useful) prizes so you get what you want anyway. If you do want the contest to provide something useful you can make it into a contest where in your visitors can enter by submitting useful/informative content and the winner being the one with the most useful/informative content. In cases where you expect visitors to make a real effort to win though you have to make sure that the prize is really good and worth their effort!

I know these are all actually old old techniques that have been and are being used to get links but the question is: have you tried them?

Oh and please do visit Free Rice and help feed the world. World peace! ^_^

OK. Very good text. But linking is even more difficult.
