Search may still be dominated by Google, but if you’ve been discounting the power of Bing to bring in traffic to your site then you are missing out on a big opportunity.
The good news is that even if you haven’t really been optimising for Bing, the fact that you are optimising for Google will already mean that you are also probably doing everything right by Bing as well; after all even if search engines do have different algorithms, they still want us to follow the same best practices and so look for the same factors that signal a useful, relevant, and reputable site.
To make sure you are doing everything you can to rank well in Bing, what you can do is to sign up for Bing’s Webmaster Tools. Much of the tools there have functionalities that are pretty redundant with what Google’s Webmaster Tools has to offer (i.e. keyword research tools, sites that link to you, traffic stats, sitemap submissions, etc.), but what you should realise is that some of the information you can get and share there is specific to Bing. For example, submitting a sitemap via Google’s Webmasters Tools will obvious only affect Googlebot’s ability to find and crawl URLs in your site, so it makes sense to use Bing’s Webmaster Tools to do this as well to ensure that all your URLs are crawled and indexed by MSN bot too.
Just make sure that you don’t waste your time doing tasks repeatedly on both Webmaster Tools that only need doing once. Work efficiently and make the most of what Google and Bing has to offer so that your site will truly be optimised for all search engines and not just for Google.
