There is no sure-shot, short-cutway of getting into the top 10 results of the major search engines if you ask me frankly. What you can do is, increase the chances, and keep on increasing the chances until you really begin to appear among the top 10 ranking results. If you try hard, and if you try persistently (the duration of persistency depends on your effort and your competition) one day you’ll get there. Until then, keep doing the following:

Generate lots of relevant content on a regular basis

Your relevant content is your key to the higher rankings. The search engines simply love well-written relevant content because that’s what they want to present to their users. The more content you have, the more convinced the search engines become of your expertise. Also, with many pages, you provide search engines lots of pages to index and rank. So if you are not being ranked well for one page, then you might get ranked well for another. Among, say, 120 pages, even if you have 10 highly-ranked pages, they are going to boost the overall ranking of your website.

Use suggestive titles

Titles tell the tale, partly as well as completely. They are the indication of what lies within. Your title is carefully followed by the search engines as well as your readers. Just for education sake, search for a term and you’ll observe for the majority of cases the expression being searched for appears in the title of the link displayed on the results page. It’s ideal to sum up the entire essence of your web page content in the title, or put the question in the title that is being answered by the web page. ALWAYS try to use your important keywords in the title tag of your web page.

Use suggestive headings

Group your various content sections under suggestive headings, preferably containing your keywords. Headings are primarily used to present the gist of your web page to your reader. Headings make your content easily scannable to both the search engine crawlers and your human readers. In fact the search engines use the text in your headings to figure out what you are trying to convey through your web page.

Maintain a perfect sitemap

Your sitemap can be used to find the right pages at the earliest possible time. It’s a linear collection of all the important links your domain contains under it. Search engines like Google use the sitemap to quickly crawl the website. If you maintain your sitemap you help the search engines crawl your web pages without facing broken links or other hurdles.

Get high-quality inbound links

The inbound links are links that you get from other highly ranked websites. Just take care that these websites are not of spurious nature because you can get penalized for, although inadvertently, wrong associations. It’s actually a self-serving factor. The others will link to you if you have valuable content, and if the others link to you the search engines think you’ve got valuable content. So you’ll only get quality links if you have lots of valuable content.

Use right keywords within the right tags

Some tags are given importance by the search engines. For instance, if you enclose your keywords within <a></a> the search engines think you are linking to some important information related to the keywords. Similarly, if your keywords appear within <li></li> the search engines think that you listing some relevant facts about your keywords.

This way, the list of things you can do to get the top 10 rankings can go on and on, but these are the main things that you should take care of.

Nice post! Good Start for beginners. You can add that the indbound links must be well-anchored with lots of keywords.

Good thing Content was #1 – I hear too often that links rule rankings (probably because it’s true to an extent) but without a content foundation, what the h$ll are you going to build links too?
